|The top unit on the roller reefing gear - stripped open to check the bearing. The sheave is for the integral wire halyard.
It's a pretty high quality alloy - but that top lug holds the entire sail, roller and forestay !
I'm thinking it could have two reinforcing cheeks added - bolted through lower down toward the flange, or drilled and tapped into the top end, which is about 8mm thick - just for some reassurance.
I would imagine it would be difficult to get it welded - alloy wise. That said - we trust our luck to one little piece of pressed copper swage on forestay anyway. I've polished up one side an looked at it under a photo loupe and there are no signs of any stress marks.
